I He attains the honored position by virtue of a service record longer long-er than any other member of the UDper house, a service which began March 5, 1903. The former , dean of. the senate, Senator Simmons, of North Carolina, Caro-lina, relinquished his seat, Tuesday, Tues-day, the dosing day of. the present congress. T He refused to become a candidate for re-election after serving since. 1887. Senator Smpot has, been a stalwart stal-wart champion of the west during his service of .28 years. He has been considered one of the leaders of the Republican party, and his voice has been heard in matters of national as. well as international importance. Utah's senior senator, a member of the council of the twelve of the L. D. S. church since 1898 is the son of Abraham O. andAnna Kir-stine Kir-stine Mouritsen Smoot.;' He was born January 10, 1862, in Salt Lake. In 1872, Senator Smoot moved with his. parents to Provo. He attended at-tended the Timpanogos branch of the University oe. Deseret, later the i Brigham Young academy, from ; 1876 to 1879. After . leaving the university, he became an employe of the Provo Cooperative . I nstitution, sacking fruit, sorting potatoes and doing odd jobs. He became superintendent superintend-ent of the store in September, 1880, holding , the position until April, : 18S4, when he became manager of j the Provo Woolen mills. He left for Liverpool, England, ; in November, 1890, on a mission for the L. P. S. church, .returning to Provo October 1, 1891, because of the illness of. his father. |
