Show MAN CONFESSES GRAHAM THEFT IN SPRINGVILLE Harry Shroeder Arrested in Salt Lake, Confesses Robbing Rob-bing Springville Man. Harry Shroeder, of Freeport, 111., was arrested in Suit Lnke City Tuesday morning by Detective Clifford Clif-ford Patton, on order of Deputy Sheriff Karl Boshard and charged with having stolen money and checks from G. W. Graham, of Springville. After his arrest Shroeder confessed confes-sed to Deputy Boshard. ' In his confession, written and signed, Shroeder says he came to Provo between April 20 and 26 and being unable to secure employment in Provo, went on to the steel plant, where, too, he failed to get work. "I slept in a haystack, near Springville that night," Shroeder confessed, "and next morning walked to a house near Springville. Later I learned that G. W. Graham, an old man, lived there alone. There was no person near so I opened the screen door and walked into the house. I found a money pouch under un-der the pillow on the bed and took it." The pouch contained about $50 in currency, a bank book, showing a time deposit in El Paso, Texas, of S10O0 and two deposit certificates of the Knight Trust & Savings bank, of Provo. One of these certificates was for $700 and another for $100. "I took the next train for Salt Lake,"' says Shroeder, in his confession, confes-sion, "and after spending the $50 took the Knight bank checks to the Walkers Bros, bank to deposit them." The man gave his name as "G. W. Graham" at the Walker bank and showed the El Paso bank book with a deposit of $1,000 credited to him. He asked for $50 of the Knight checks and was told that he must be identified. lie returned to the bank Inter, with identification and was given $50. That was last Saturday, Satur-day, Monday lie returned and cashed a check for $200. At about the same time the Walker bank heard from the Provo bank that Graham had stopped payment on the $50 check which had gone through regular banking channels. The sheriff's office in Provo was notified Monday afternoon nnd Deputy Dep-uty Boshard telephoned to Detective Tatton asking him to be at the bank to apprehend Shroeder if he showed up again. The detective went to the Walker bank Tuesday morning nnd Deputies Karl Boshard and Otto Birk and Marshal Henry Clark of Springville, loft Trovo for Salt Lake. As Deputy Sheriff had "doped it out" Shroeder showed up at the Walker bank Tuesday morning, hoping hop-ing to cash nnother check. As he was getting the money Detective Patton stepped up and arrested him. When the Utah county officials came up they questioned Shroeder, who finally broke down and made a frank confession of the whole matter. |
