Show AMUNDSEN PLANS PLANT FLAG AT POLE ROME, Jan., 39. (UP) Roald , Amundsen will not attempt a land- j ing at the Xorth Pole if he succeeds j in flying a dirigible there next summer, but will hover over it and drop a pointed steel pole, so balanced bal-anced that the Norwegian flag it carries will fly at the toy). This, according to Colonel Xobile, j constructor of the Amundsen dirigible, dirig-ible, will avoid the difficulty of anchoring an-choring on ,an icy surface. "Althouiii feasible, anchoring would be wholly useless," Colonel Xobile told the United Press in an exclusive interview. "It would give us no scientific advantage. I think the; dirigible will be perfectly capable cap-able of remaining still for hours very close to the ground, which would make observations for locating locat-ing the precise Pole comparatively ensj." Snrron'Hns to determine the 'depth of tne sea, according to Xobile,, Xo-bile,, wil be effected by dropping charges from the airship and re rd-ing rd-ing the time between the explosicn and the echo from the ocriau bjd. He also explained that a new beating beat-ing system will be employed, t'iking advantage of heat chemically produced pro-duced by the exposure of certain metals to humidity. The crew of the reconstructed dirigible starts training in actual ! airmanship next week, i Most of the personnel, chosen j with great care and after strenuous 'physical examination, were with Amundsen- on the polar vessel 'Maud" when he previously attempted at-tempted to reach the Pole. The "Maud" was recently sold in Seattle for debt Colonel Xobile said that Amundsen Amund-sen would probably not fly from Rome, but wuld join the ship at Oslo. |
