Show BRYAN SPEECH REMARKABLE DOCL . Unspoken Argument of Bryan to Scopes Jury is Made Public By JOHN MMK K. DAYTON". Tenn., Julyl 2S. The spirit of "William Jennings Bryan spoke today as if to take up the battle in the midst of which the flesh had died. It spoke as a crusader, going forth to battle the "forces of darkness' dark-ness' in behalf of the forces of light. It assaulted the fortress of evolution evolu-tion and defended the old religions, ! proclaiming a simple faith in the Bible as the inspired word and the Christian belief as a revealed religion. re-ligion. It likened the Tennessee evolution trial to the Christ before Tilate and proclaimed : "Again force and love meet face to face and the question of 'what shall I do with Jesus?' must be answered. an-swered. A bloody brutal doctrine evolution dr:nandsf as the rabble did 5!t)0 years ago, that he be minified. mini-fied. i The spirit of the leader spoke through the text of the speech which Bryan had prepared as the closing ! argument in the proeecutton of John i Thomas Scopes for violating the Tennessee evolution law. The speech had not been delivered at the trial and before it could be pub-lishd, pub-lishd, Bryan bad died. It was mnde available to the Cnited Press today and found to stand as a remarkable document of more than ten thousand wonK running run-ning the gamut from the almost sublime to bitterest condemnation nf the 'damnable philosophy" which "is the flower that blooms on the stalk of evolution." It ridicules and denounces Clarence Clar-ence Darrow's defense of Locb and Leopold and cites tneir case as typical typ-ical of the things the teaching of evolution lends to. It calls Charles Darwin, the father of the theory of evolution as a witness and quotes from his writings writ-ings to show that the started life firm in an orthodox faith in a "personal "per-sonal God" and his studied led him into agnosticism. One can easily picture the fire of Bryan's sarensm now stilled forever as the speech reads: '"There is no more reason to believe that the man descended from some inferiov animal than there is to believe that a stately mansion has descended from a small cottage. And in the next paragraph it passes to a vein almost prophetic of his awn approaching denth, as it says : hearts of men and women and lead them out into the starless night?" Bryan asked, in commenting on the life of Darwin. "Then in support of the same Indictment, he launched into a long discussion of the Loeb-Leopold Loeb-Leopold case, in which Clarence Harrow was the attorney for the accused ac-cused murderers of "Hobby" Franks. He quoted at length from Darrow's speech in defense of I.oeb nnd Leopold, Leo-pold, wherein Darrow argued that Leopold was (he victim of the philosophy phil-osophy of Nietzsche, made nvaialhle to him when be was yet too young to guard against its dangerous teachings "of the superman" whn is above the law. He became more bitter when lie took up the defense of Locb that Locb was the victim of some hereditary hered-itary taint handed down "by some remote ancestor." "This is (lie quintessence of evolution evo-lution is distilled for us by one who follows that doctrine to its logical conclusion," the npeeeh rends. "Analyze this dogma of darkness and death. Evolutionists says that back in the twilight of life a beast, name and nature unknown, planted a murderous seed" anil that the impulse im-pulse that originated in that seed throbs forever in the blood of the brute's descendant, inspiring killings innumerable, for which the murderers mur-derers are not responsible because coerced by a fate fixed by the laws of heredity. It Is an insult to reason and shocks the heart. That doctrine is as deadly as leoprisy." Third Evolution "diverts the attention at-tention from' pressing problems of great importance to trifling speculation. specula-tion. While on evolutionist is trying try-ing to imagine what happened In the past, another Is trying to pry open the door of the distant future. One recently grew eloquent over ancient worms and another predicted predict-ed that seventy five thousand years hence everyone will be bald and toothless. But those who endeavor to clothe our remote ancestors with hair and those whose endeavor is to remove the hair from the beads of our remote descendants ignoro the present with Its imperative demands. de-mands. "The science oL 'bow (o live' is the most important of all sciences. Christians desire that their children shall be taught all (he sciences but they do not want (hem to lose sight of the 'Itoek of Ages' while they study the 'Age of Hocks'." Fourth Evolution "by paralyzing the hope of reform, discourages those who labor for the improvement improve-ment of man's condition. Evolution chills that enthusiasm by subslilul-ing subslilul-ing aeons for years. It obscures all beginnings in the mists of the endless end-less ages. Evolution, lliputing the miracles and ignoring the spiritual in life, has no place for the regen-eralion regen-eralion of the individual. "It is because Christians believe in individual regeneration and in the regeneration' of society through the regeneration of individuals thai they pray 'Iby Kingdom come, th.v will be done on earlh as it is in Heaven.' Evolution makes a mockery mock-ery of tlit- Lord's prayer. To Interpret In-terpret the words to mean that the improvement desired must crone slowly through unfolding ages a process with wlnVh each generation could have time to do is (o defer hope and hope deferred makelh the heart sick-." "If on the oilier band, the law is upheld and the religion of the school 'children prelected, millions of Chris-ians Chris-ians will call you blessed." "There is a spiritual gravitation that drays all souls toward Heaven just as surely ns there is a physical force that draws all matter on the surface of the earth toward the earth's center. Christ is our drawing draw-ing power. He said, 'I, if I be lifted up from this earth, will draw all men unto me' nnd his promise is being be-ing fulfilled daily all over the world." But a few pages farther on the flame of sarcasm again burns as the speech attacks and ridicules a diagram purporting to show the "family tree" of the human race and classifying each species of living things according to the teachings of evolution. "It might require some very nice calculation." the speech read, "to determine at what degree of relationship rela-tionship the killing of a relative ceases to be murder and Ihe eating of one's kin ceases to be cannibalism." cannibal-ism." "Evolutionists do not feel it is incumbent in-cumbent upon them to show how life began." he said. "God may be a matter of indifference to the evolutionists evo-lutionists nnd a life beyond have no charm for them, but the mass of mankind will continue to worship their creator and to find comfort in the promise of their Savior that he has gone to prepare a place for them. "Christ has made nf death a narrow, nar-row, starlit strip betwen the companionship com-panionship or yesterday and the reunion re-union of tomorrow ; evolution strikes out Ihe stars and deepens the gloom that enshrouds the tomb." Five "indictments" are then brought against evolution. First "That it disputes the truth of the Bible account: of man's creation crea-tion nnd shakes faith in the Bible as the word of God." Second "That evolution 'disputes every vital truth in the Bible' and 'its natural if not inevitable' tendency ten-dency 'is to lead those who really accept II, first to agnosticism and then to atheism.' It is in proof of this indictment that Charles Darwin Dar-win is called as the 'first witness' nnd in the history of bis spiritual life is cited, quoting extensively from Darwin's writing and those of his son. Francis Darwin. "Do these evolutioniists step to Ihink of (he crime they commit when they take faith out of thet |
