Show Roberts Accepts Secretaryship At. Utah University Former 'Y' Physical Education Chief and Coach Takes Up New Duties Soon; N Achievements Reviewed. ed under his direction. He began the professional school for physical directors and athletic coaches a school which now furnishes a good proposition of the high school coaches and women directors in Utah, Idaho and Arizona. Many noted athletes have come under the guiding hand of E. L. Roberts. Alma Richards and Clinton Clin-ton Larsen, two of Utah's greatest athletes, are among the most famous who were trained by the veteran "Y" mentor. Buck Dixon, Bob Howard, McDonald, Brown, Owen Rowe and Mark Reeve are others who have known his influence influ-ence in athletics. In basketball, Roberts is recognized recog-nized as one of the nation's outstanding out-standing authorities. He has been a member of the national rules committee com-mittee for many years, and is one of the outstanding proponents of the elimination of the center jump a matter which came up for serious seri-ous consideration at the last meeting meet-ing of the national rules committee, which Roberts attended. Many Rocky Mountain championship champion-ship basketball teams were developed de-veloped inder Roberts' direction. Hoop championships of state and conference came to B. Y. U. in great numbers while Roberts handled its basketball destinies. A keen student of the game, he developed de-veloped some remarkable teams one of which became famous by coming within one point ofi the national na-tional A. A. U. honors. ( E. L. "Gene" Roberts, for many years director of physical education educa-tion and head coach of the B. Y. U., has accepted the position of executive secretary at the University Univer-sity of Utah, and will take up his duties there in the near future. As secretary to President George Thomas, Roberts will have extensive extens-ive contact with the various departments, de-partments, faculty and student organizations or-ganizations o,f the school. It is possible pos-sible that promotion and publicity work may be included in the duties of the secretaryship. It will not be connected with athletics pn any way, according to officials of that institution. Themn S. Roberts is now at the University of Southern California, where he is spending sabbatical leave from the B. Y. U- He was slated to direct-the direct-the recreational activities of the U. S. C. summer school, but may be released from that position to report at the Utah school at once. Roberts is famed throifghPjut the west as a great recreational leader, and his keen knowledge of basketball, basket-ball, in particular, has made him a recognized authoritv on athletics. ) I and play of all types. Roberts. He was j instrumental in building this com-! munity hike into one of the nations na-tions outstanding community recreational recre-ational projects, for which hundreds hun-dreds of visitors from all parts of the nation have come to attend. Annual moonlight hikes to Maple Flat, and various sunrise, sunset and autumn leaf hikes to Timpanogos, Timpan-ogos, are among the other projects sponsored and developed by Roberts. The mammoth "Y" invitation track and held meet and relay carnival, which annually brings some 1,500 high school, junior high school and junior college athletes, men and women, to ' Provo, is another an-other of his creations. The 1929 carnival, the nineteenth annual affair, af-fair, was the first in the meet's history not under the personal direction di-rection of E. L. Roberts. Ten years ago, he began a class in social and recreational leadership, leader-ship, for the purpose of turning out each year 100 men and women from among the B. Y. U...upperclassmen for leadership in socials, dances, parties, ward festivals, hikes, sports I |
