The unfinished road on which the men are working, was started three years ago and extends from U.S. Highway 189, six miles northeast of Provo, then south through the high mountains to Hobble Creek Canyon east of Springville. Cut and blasted through mountainous terrain, the road has been described as "the Alps Scenic Loop," but most people from this ai'ea refer to it as "Camel Back Road" since is passes behind Camel Back Mountain and offers a thrilling birds-eye view of the valley from that mountain. When finished, it will stretch nearly 30 miles and will give the traveler a two-lane highway, built by the Utah National Guard, venturing over mountain ranges which were passable a few years back by only a foot path. Not all of the men in the company are working on the road. Some are supporting the 115th Engineer Bn. at the East Pork of Bear River near Evanston, Wyo.; others are on the road up at Francis Peak east of Bountiful working for the U. S. Air Force; some are on the six-month training course at Fort Ord, Calif., and others are supporting the 1457th Engineer Bn. of American Fork with a pool of equipment and operators. Sixty percent of the men in the 116th Engineer Light Equipment Co. are operators 'of different equipment, truck drivers, tractor operators, grade operators and crane shovel operators. Others are in the mess section and supply maintenance. mainten-ance. The men are fed well on the job, such food as fried chicken and strawberry shortcake being on the menus. Breakfast is at 6:30 a.m.; dinner at 11:30 and supper at 6 p.m. The Springville unit is the only light equipment company in the Sixth Army Area (from Denver to California). In financial terms, none of the Guard officers would venture ven-ture a guess on how much the canyon road would cost if the state paid private contractors to do the job. But Captain Cole, commander of the 116th, explained that the engineers have more than a half-million dollars worth of equipment tied up on the job. The accompanying photographs were taken by Harrison Conover during last Thursday's tour of inspection on which several Springville officials were invited. - : - . . . . - .
