Recent spring aerial census of Utah's only buffalo herd found 56 of the big animals ranging on the west edge of the Burr Desert south of Hanksville. This band of animals, a liv ing reminder of days gone, by was introduced into Utah in 1941. Eighteen animals com-prised the ariginal release which was sponsored by the department of fish and game and the Carbon-Emer- y Wildlife Federation. An additional 5 animals were added to the herd in the following year. Since introduction the small herd has grown steadily in numbers to a point where, in recent years, limited hunting has been allowed. Shipments of an additional 100 Grey and 126 Black Fran- - colins expected to arrive at the Utah Department of Fish and Game Price Game Farm with-in next, few days will great-ly speed up experinental work in the hatchery production of these game birds currently un-derway. Goal of the experimentation is to obtain eggs from these and several other exotic game species mostly Asiatic in Or-igin from which to raise brood birds. Success in this first stage of the project which has been underway for the past two years would mean even-tual production of enough birds for planting in the wild. The department said it is believed they would occupy habitat areas not currently suitable for, or used by, native or introduced upland birds. All persons having in. their possession furbearing animals for either commercial or non-commercial use must first ob-tain a private fur farm per-mit. This was the reminder isued this week by the depart-ment of fish and game after a search of permit records in-dicated that several fur farm-ers have not complied with the law. Furbearing animals were listed by the department as otter, mink, marten or sable, and beaver. Fur farm permits are issued by the department at no cost to fur ranchers. Applications for permits must be made in writing' to the nearest depart-ment regional office and must describe the farm, its location and the type or types of ani- - mals proposed for rearing. Department offices, are loc-ated in Ogden, Provo, Price, and Cedar City.
