Show liavyman Taking Part in Exercises James V. Brailsford, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mrs. Augusta Brailsford of 785 E. Tenth South St., Springville, serving aboard the heavy cruiser cruis-er USS Helena, is taking part in a large fleet training exercise ex-ercise off the coastof Southern California, Nov. 2-6, involving units of the U. S. Pacific Fleet. The exercise, under the direction di-rection of the Commander of the First Fleet is pitting "Blue" attack carrier striking forces against opposing "Orange" "Or-ange" defensive forces. The Blue forces are launching carrier car-rier aircraft attacks and simulated simu-lated guided missile attacks oh a large land mass. The Orange defenders are attempting to stop them with Navy carrier and land-based aircraft- and surface craft. Submarines are practicing attacks on the groups during the early phases of the exercise. exer-cise. Operations of this type are designed to prepare units of the First Fleet for deployment to the Far East and duty with the U. S. Seventh Fleet. |
