The train appeared after four of the people had been killed, and Thompson and bis wife defended themselves back of the barricaded doors of the station. As the work train appeared the Indians withdrew. The train bearing Colonel Maxson and party continued to a station fifteen miles farther along the line and then, as the signs of the desperado uprising became alarming, the party decided to return. The train started back oward Lancho, and when it arrived "he station house had been burned nd demolished, and four human bod's lay along the tracks. The party stopped a few minutes in io hope that survivors might be (bund and taken to a place of safety. While the tialn was at the ruins of t Be station, the desperadoes appeared In the distance, but did not come within range of the few armed people on the train. Not many miles along the road the scene was duplicated. Four more dead bodies of Mexicans and Americans were discovered along the tracks. The little band at this station had been able to repulse the attack of the Yaquls with the loss of but four of their number. President Roosevelt haa issued a proclamation calling on the people of the United States to contribute funds for the relief of the million of famine sufferers In China, who are on the verge ot starvation. The president says that he will ask congress for authority to use government transport vessels to carry food to the famine stricken region. The proclamation la aa follows: To the People of the United States: There la an appaling famine In China. Throughout a district covering over 40,000 square miles and supporting a population of 16,000,000 the crops have been destroyed by floods, and millions of people are on the verge of starvation. Thousands of dwellings have been destroyed and their Inmates are without homes. An urgent appeal haa been made for the assistance ol the United States. "Our people have often under similar conditions of distress In other countries responded generously to such appeals. Amid our abounding prosperity and in this holiday season of good will to man, assuredly we should do our part to aid the unfortunate and relieve the distressed among the people of China, to whom we have been allied for so many years In friendship and kindness. "I shall ask congress upon Its next day of session for authority to use our transport vessels to carry flour and other food to the famine stricken region. I recommend that contributions for the purchase of such food and other appropriate relief be sent to the American National Red Cross, which will take care of the expenditures. Such contributions may be made either through the local Red Cross treasurers or through the department of state, or may be sent directly to Charles Hallam Keep, Red Cross treasurer, United States Treasury department, Washington, D.
