President Lorenzo Snow' next addressed the conference. He opened with a picture of the blissful condition to prevail when the millennium shall arrive. The world, at present, from a moral point of view, was most forbidding. Tho press was filled with accounts of detestable crimes and human misery. All would be altered and all should endeavor to hasten the coming change. He spoke of the need men folt at times for supernatural aid agejiiat earthly difficulties. Sometime the lives of elders had been In peril, but they had been saved by following the directions of the spirit of God. President Snow V closed by asking God to bless Presl-- J dent Woodruff. Elder H. J. Grant then addressed the conference. He rejoiced in the fellowship and Integrity of the Saints, and In the diligence of those who presided In the stakes of Zion. The disposition, he said, to depend upon the tithing of each stake for the support of its poor, there eta, was happily dying out, toandsustain was a pleasing tendency with church of the the presidency means as well as by fnlth. Prayer was offered by President Edward Partridge, and the hymn, The Spirit of God, Like a Fire, Is Burnm trans-continen- tal Taylor-conclude- ing, followed. Apostle George Teasdalc, missionary of the church in Mexico,' preached the opening sermon, taking for Ills theme tlie mission of the church In spreading the gospel of truth to all the nations of the earth. Ho felt gratified at the progress made by his church in shedding light in darkened lands, and said they had great occasion for rejoicing. He saw the evidences of God's blessings and revelations on all sides, and os an Instance, pointed to the great temple, which, he said, could not have been designed and built without divine revelation. He closed- by felicitating the iieople upon the grand purposes of the meeting, and said lie felt amply repaid for Ills travel of 1200 miles In order to be In attendance at the conference. JOHN IIENRY SMITH. The duly and Importance of spreading Hie gospel in order that the iieople may lie warm'd o I the of truth uiion the earth, formed the Smith's subject of Apostle John Henry ' discourse. He said the message entrusted to the Latter-Da-y SnbVs was on? of peace and truth, andoteater glory, happlnpss and pence of mind and hrnrt could he attaint'd by living up to Its teachings ns expounded by the leaders of tne church. There were still millions that had never heard this glorious message, which, he said, was Introduced liy the Savior and preached by Ids disciples, and the work of the Mormon church would not lie finished until the message had been carried to all the people of the earth. In spite of tlie. prejudices that had always existed In many men's minds, the church was making wonderful progress, he said, and the great scholars of the world were examining Its teachings, and many were recognizing Us principles of love and truth. He exhorted his hearers to awaken to a greater realization of the importance of .tlielr mission, and manifest more Interest In the work. STRENGTH OF THE CHURCH. Apostle M. V. Merrill reported the total number of baptisms In all the temples of the Mormon church from Its organization up to December 31, 1S94, was 733.737. These figures did not include the work done in the endowment-houses, which, however, had been duplicated in most cases, so the number was very nearly correct. The siieakcr considered this but a small beginning compared with the multitudes to whom this great blessing was unknown. He urged the members to greater Interest in temple work. President AYilford AVoodruff supplemented Apostle Merrill's closing remarks by saying the temples had been built and should be made use of by the Latter-Da- y Salnta, who were responsible for the deliverance of Gods message to the living and the dead. After the announcement of society meetings, the choir sang the anthem, "Jesus, I My Cross Have Taken," and the closing prayer was offered by J. G. Kimball. The conference then adjourned until 10 o'clock this morning. Miners Head Blown Off. Denver, Cola, Oct. 6.
