Show .STRIKE COMING. In a let tor addressed to the presidents presi-dents of the subsidiary companies of the 1'nited States Steel corporation, V.. II. Gary, chairman of the board of directors, direc-tors, declared "it is the settled determination determi-nation of the corporation and its subsidiaries sub-sidiaries that the wages and working conditions of their employees shall compare com-pare favorably with the highest standard stand-ard of propriety and justice.'' But this does not satisfy the labor leaders, who insist t!? strike will be ordered to en-. en-. force tho closed shop idea. It Imd been hoped that wise counsel would prevail and a strike be averted or at least postponed. post-poned. There does not appear to li j much ground for the indulgence of such I hopes. Chairman Gary will not accede to the demands made upon him and the. labor leaders assembled in l'i: tsburg are evidently not in the mood to delay the opening of the battle, which is scheduled for next Monday. No good will come out of the strike if it is called. Thousands of men will be out of employment and their families are bound to suffer. Many other non iut connected with labor tin ions will like- wise lose their positions and their wives ; nnd little ones will also suffer. The ! responsibility .will rest upon the labor I leaders who art' not saiisiu-d to let well enouglt alone. |
