A movement has been started to present him with the castle and estates which were the cradle of his family, and which hav been its home for 7w years. Uemersvde-on-the-Tv.-eed is one of the most famous border castles m .Scotland. Tt is now in the possession of the field marshal's cousin, a lieutenant-colonel, who is willing to seil it for about S-1 A fund for this purpose is being raised by a committee, the treasurer of which is the lord mayor of London. Karl Haig' on his elevation to the peerage peer-age took the title Haig of Bemersyde, so that tho presentation to him of the estate from which be takes tots title will bo especially fitting. F.einorsvdc and the Vlaig family were I mentioned by the S.-ottish poet. Thomas the Khymor, who vrote: "Tvde what mav belydc. UaiK shall be Haig ol Bemersyde." This prophecv is quoted by Sir Walter Scott, and the family motto, "Tyde what mav," is taken from it. There is little doubt that the money required will be quickly si i bscri lied, for Lord Haig is the most popular figure ill Ungland today. |
