Show CONTEMPT CHARGES CONTINUED EXCEPT IN CASE OF HOW AT INPTAXAPOLTS. Pec. 16. Except as to Alexander Howat, president of the Kansas district of the United Mine "Workers of America, charges of contempt of court against eighty -four officials of tha t organization today were continued by United Slates District Judge A. B. Anderson until such a time as the government gov-ernment or attorneys for the defense again wish 1o bring them before the court. Thn rase n gainst Howat, who with ot her officials was alleged to have viola vio-la ted the federal court injunction against furtherance of t he strike, will be called for h earing next Monday morning. He is charged by the government with continuing in his violation of the injunction injunc-tion by using his influence to keep a local strike in Kansas in force. This strike, it was stated in court today, was called oil July 17, IflU'. hut on October 31, when t ho general strike of miners becamo effective, ef-fective, was merged with all other strikes. The government contends that the nc?"-t nc?"-t ion taken by the general committee of the United Mine 'Workers here Inst week, in accepting the proposal of President Wilson to end the general strike, also provided for ending all local strikes, and tha t continuation of thorn constituted violation of the injunction on the part of officials instrumental in keeping them in force. It was declared in court today that an official in the M issouri district of the mine workers also is guilty of violation of t ho injunction in keeping in force a strike called in sympathy with tliat of the Kansas fields. The Missouri official, however, was not named and no order lor bis appearance in court was issued. It is generally believed that if the minors min-ors corn :nue at work that the charges against them will not be pushed by the government. Pan W. Simms. special United States d'striot attorney, who represented rep-resented the government in court today, ind icated that It was the opinion of the government that, with the exception of .Howat and the Missouri official, the miners min-ers had complied with the court's injunction injunc-tion order, but stated that ho did not want the cases dismissed, as long as a possibility of resumption of the strike remained. |
