John Buxton, name warden for this district, was shot and so severely -wounded yesterday yes-terday afternoon that he died within a few minutes. Joe Mates. IS years old, was arrested and is in jail, accused of the crime. Mr. Enxton was driving in his automobile, automo-bile, accompanied by his wife, and when near K plane, a mine airshaft six miles from Rock Sprin.es, he heard Kunshots.-I and, leaving his car, went to Investigate. It is said that the officer found two boys, one of whom had u sun, and that Mr. Buxton tool: the weapon from the boy and turned to go back to his car. He had only one a few steps, however, when three shots rang out, one of the bullets passing through Mr. Buxton's hack and left luns. Mr. Buxton was able to get near enough to his car to notify his wife that he was shot and she hastened to K plane for assistance. An ambulance was obtained and a start was made for the hospital in Rock Springs, but the wounded man died on the way. Mates is said to have run away from the scene of the shooting and was found later by Sheriff Stoddard, hiding in a lumber yard. The boy makes light of the affair and apparently does not realize that he is in a serious predicament. Joe Coleman, who was with Mates at tho time of the shooting, says he prevented pre-vented Mates from tiring a fourth shot at the game warden. |
