FATALITY NUBS PORTLAND VISIT (Continued Trent Page One.) i and this is why it happened: In every town where tho president has spoken local committees have arranged ar-ranged an automoile procession in ad- j vance for his party and all persons on j the special train are assigned to a cer- i tain numbered car in each town. In car No. 7 were Messrs. Allen, Small, Keynolds and David Lawrence, the Washington correspondent of the New York Evening Post. Today, however, when they approached No. 7 car here, they found that the majority of its seats were taken by local townspeople. Mr. Lawrence decided not to go on the drive, while Allen, Small and Keynolds sought another motor and obtained seats in No. 18 in the procession. On the return from Crown Point Patterson's Pat-terson's car had some engine trouble and was slightly delayed. When repairs were made he attempted to regain his place in the line and speeded up. The motor, a large, seven-passenger car, i had a clear roadway for a time, but meanwhile other motorists, anxious to j slide out from crossroads to trail the president, had hedged in. One of these was C. H. Barnett and it stalled in the middle of the highway. Patterson tried to avert a collision, but his car was traveling at such a high rate of speed that it left the road. Mr. Allen was in the front seat, as was Patterson. The three other men were in the rear seat and were thrown clear of the car, which after turning turtle, righted itself on the road. Mr.' Allen was one of the best known Washington correspondents and he leaves a widow and a small daughter. Mr. Small, before becoming a Washington Wash-ington correspondent of the Public Ledger, was a war correspondent for the Associated Press, and Mr. Reynolds, until he entered the war service of tho government, was manager of the Washington Wash-ington bureau of the Universal Service. Serv-ice. President Wilson tonight sent the following fol-lowing message of condolence to Mrs. Ben F. Allen, widow of the correspondent correspon-dent who was killed in today's fatal accident: "Mrs. Benjamin F. Allen,' Care of Washington Bureau, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Washington, D. C: "Our hearts go out to you in deepest deep-est sympathy in the tragical death of your husband, whom we all esteemed and trusted. He will be missed as a true friend and a man who always intelligently in-telligently sought to do his dutv. (Signed)' "WOOPROW WILSON." |
