Show BRIGGS MURDER ESSE PRESENTED District Attorney Outlines What State Expects to Prove in Trial. Presentation of the stato's case was bofrun yesterday afternoon before a jtoy in the criminal division of the Third district, court in the case of Thomas Linker, charged jointly with his wife. Maud Linker, and William H. Brooks, a negro, with the murder of Joseph Jo-seph Briggs, an aged farmer of Fair-view, Fair-view, Utah, on January 13. Briggs was fatally snot while resisting resist-ing robbery on Second South street, between Fifth and Sixth West. District Attorney Frank S. Richards stated that the state would attempt to prove that Linker was associated iu the killing of Briggs shortly after Briggs had visited the Macedonia rooming room-ing house on West Second South street, of which Mrs. Linker was the landlady, and there displaved a roll of money He said evidence would be presented U prove that Linker received information about the money from Mrs. Linker and that he participated in tbe holdup with fatal result for the victim. Impaneling of a jury was completed before 10:30 o'clock yesterday morning, morn-ing, but five and one-half hours having hav-ing been required. A recess was ordered or-dered until 2 o'clock to permit the jurors jur-ors to make necessary arrangements for being held away from their homes and business during the trial. Immediately upon resumption of court the jury was sworn and the district attorney outlined out-lined the state's case. A map of the locality of the crime was introduced and identified by C. C fartinrl. Br. C. J. Nielsen, assistant county physieian, testified as to the nature na-ture of tiao bullet wound in the neck from which Briggs died almost instantly. instant-ly. William T. Brings, son of the murdered mur-dered man, testified of having seen his father last at about 9:30 o'clock of the evening preceding the murder in front of the Pantages theater. He said he did not know where his father went from there. Rubv Wayne, a negress, one of the state's principal witnesses, was on the witness stand when court adjourned. She had told of seeing two men enter the Macedonia, where she herself had a room. She further told of participating participat-ing in entertaining the men and of having hav-ing wen Briggs exhibit a large sum of money when his companion wanted a check cashed, Briggs offering to cash it when it was questioned. She testified testi-fied that she took the cheek and that subsequently she received money for it from Mrs. Linker, the amount being five dollars. Examination of the jurors was conducted con-ducted largely by the court, under the provision of the statutes, each juror being exhaustively questioned by Judge Stephens before being turned over to the opposing counsel for further examination. exam-ination.
