Show PARK CITY STRIKERS QISCMATI Former Mayor Urges Men to Join Regular Miners' Union. Special to The Tribune. PARK CITY, Utah, June 2. Citizens and strikers met at the Orpheum theater here tonight to discuss generally the mine situation. Handbills had been posted during the day by some of the radical element advising the strikers not to attend at-tend the meeting, as It was believed measures mea-sures would be taken to vote against the strike before the demands of the mine workers were complied with. The meeting was called to order at 8 o'cJock by Chairman A. P. Ridge, a former for-mer mayor of Park City. He introduced United States District Attorney W. W. Ray, who spoke on the labor question and. the I. W. W. He said the men had the right to strike and post pickets, but declared thoy had no right to use force j In the attempt to gain their ends. He I was well received. I A. H. Addy, representing the strikers, i said he had no faith in tne radical ele-' ele-' ment, but favored the strike. David i Gwilliams, chairman of the Strike com-i com-i mittee, followed by saying that few mine : workers were in the audience because of the suspicion they had formed during the i day that the meeting was called to take a vote calling off the strike. ; W. R. Jefford, a business man of Park : City, said efforts had been made to bring ! the- opposing factions together, but that no headway had been made. He was followed by E. Adamson, a member of the ! strike committee, who talked about the ! high cost of living and the ill effects it i had upon the strikers, and alleged that i no middle ground of compromise had been suggested by the mine operators. Chairman Ridge advised the men to join the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, and expressed his belief that if a committee coukl be appointed ap-pointed from this union to present its claims to the mine operators, a settlement settle-ment would be reached. The sentiment of the majority of those who attended the meeting was that if the mine owners would post a notice for a resumption of work and would announce a wage scale with a 75-cent increase, the strike would' be over. |
