Howe, commissioner com-missioner of immigration at Eliis island, has been demanded by Senator King o Utah, Democrat, on the ground that Commissioner Com-missioner Howe presided at the soviet I meeting at Madison Square Garden last j week. Senator King, who is a member o the Overman subcommittee which in- j vestlgated Bolshevism last winter, com- , municated his demand directly to Anthony i Caminettl, the commissioner general of ! immigration, but was told that Mr. Cami- j nettl had not the power to remove Mr. j Howe, who is a presidential appointee. ! The senator is now awaiting develop- , ments, but said today that if Mr. Howe was not removed from office a resolution insisting upon his removal and investigat- ing his. conduct would be introduced in j the senate. ; Other members of the Overman sub- i committee, which was a subdivision ot ! the senate, judiciary committee, expressed indignation today "that Mr. Howe should have presided at the meeting. Senator Nelson of Minnesota said: "If the meeting was of the character described by the New York Call, the So- , cialist newspaper, -and - any government official presided, I certainly think It was -highly improper.
