Show II OLSON GIVES CLUB GOOD SERVICE Ivan Olson, who, when the Robins are engaged in battle, may be seen cavorting cavort-ing between second and third, is playing a corking good game for Uncle Robbie, and he has been a big factor in the club's powerful attack since the season opened, savs a Brooklyn scribe. Ivan has very often been the target for unjust criticism criti-cism coming from Flatbush rooters, who were never slow to seize an opportunity opportu-nity to hurl uncomplimentary remarks in his general direction, but who, on the other hand, seldom arose to give him the great amount of credit due him for the many brilliant plays he has made himself or taken part In. With Olson at short the Robins' Infield will never be strong, seems to be the opinion of many of the club's supporters; but if the truth were known, the hard position is now being filled in a most satisfactory, manner man-ner and bv the same Mr. Olson. Uncle Robbie is leading a team composed of hard-working athletes always striving to win and in doing so are giving then-best, then-best, but perhaps no other member of the aggregation is as hard a worker as Olson He is certainly energetic and is a ball player of the -most aggressive tv-pe, fighting to win from the time a game starts until the last man has been put out. He is also a smart and quick-thinking athlete. Like every other ball player, Ivan knows what it is like to boot a grounder that should have been, in the eyes of those in the stands, easily handled. But often it is Ivan's fortune, or, rather, misfortune, mis-fortune, to miss one when it will do his team the most harm. In fielding his position Ivan covers a lot of territory. Several times he has backed to deep short and made pretty pickups of hard raps and followed the neat stops with accurate throws to first in time to get the wouid-be safe hitter. He has also backed out and made nice catches of high pop flies. These he seldom sel-dom misses. As the lead-off man in the batting array, he is succeeding in reaching reach-ing the first bag with a fair degree of consistency, and on the basepaths he has shown a lot of speed and good headwork. Besides fielding his own position in a capable manner, he Is helping Lew Ma-lone Ma-lone at third. Lew looks like a mighty promising athlete, but his major league experience is limited, and Ivan is doing a' great deal to carry him along in the field. |
