Show PEACE TIME lff MERCY WORK SHOWN Miss Gertrude Vaile Sayr Red Cross Work Needed More Than Ever. Mits Gertrude. Vaile, associate director of Red Cross home service work in the mountain division, was entertained at dinner last nisht at the Hotel Utah. "The need for this particular kind of work ia greater than ever, even though peace is at hand." Miss Vaile said. "Dr. Livingstone Karrand. executive head of the American Ked Cross, states that this work must be continued for several years to come, and probably that, when the need to extend help to returned soldiers and their families has ceased, it will be continued in districts where there are no efficient social relief organizations, in order to care for the weak and unfortunate unfor-tunate and to prepare for emergencies. "Tho need for this service work arises from several conditions. Now that hostilities hos-tilities have ended, the soldiers in the army of occupation and their families are apt to become a prey "to melancholy and homesickness. Then the problem of unemployment un-employment is a mighty big one. To keep the family of a soldier contented with his allotment and wages coming in regularly is a different one from that of keeping tho family contented when they have no income. The Rod Cross must cooperate co-operate with our statesmen and business men to help solve the problem of unemployment. unem-ployment. "Our obligation to the soldier who returns re-turns wounded or sick is tremendous. We are Just beginning to have our wounded and sick returned to us. "Without the work of our mighty organisation these men who have given all for us will be left without means of amusement and without a fair chance to fit themselves for a. suitable vocation. We are not only bound to nurse these boy back -to health, but we must see to it that they are given every chance to engage In some activity which will be at once profitable and fit- , ting. A great many boys are coming back to us with the tuberculosis. Their problem is one of great difficulty. Just a little comprehension of these few prob- 1 Jems of the many that confront us during reconstruction ought to convince any- i one of the need for this particular branch ; of work." i Miss Vaile-arrived from Denver yoster- day afternoon to close the home service j Institute that began six weeks ago, and ! will return Saturday. |
