Show HARL MAGGERT WILL PLAY NO MORE BALL SAM FRANCISCO, March 4. Harl M agger t is going to auit baseball. He has let it be known that he will not sign his 19 0 contract,, and that: the professional diamonds are to see him no more. Perhaps "Maggie" realizes that there is not the same old speed in his legs, nor the same old accuracy in his batting eye, and he wants to quit while fandom's recollection of him is still a recollection of things well done. He explains, however, that he is quitting quit-ting because ho has a good shipyards job, and the financial allurements of the game are not sufficient. Besides, he is interested in a transbay wood and coal business, and if he decides to leave the shipyards he will devote his time and attention at-tention to that. Alany a fan will be sorry to see "Maggie" "Mag-gie" go. He was a real fighter, was Maggie. He fought himself into unpopularity, unpopu-larity, and was so cordially hated all around the circuit that everybody loved him, if you can get the idea. The fans like to "ride" somebody, and when Maggie Mag-gie was at his best a few years .ago he gave them plenty of opportunity to get in the saddle and jab home the spurs. |
