Show EXTREME SOCIALISM. Frank J. Hayes, president of the United Mine Workers of America' has recommended a six-hour work day, a five-day week, an increase in wages of miners and nationalization of the coal mines of the country. Of course, Mr. Hayes intends that the men working six hours a day for five days in the week shall receive just as much pay as they would be entitled to by working eight hours per day for six days each week, and the reason fgr hi advocacy of nationalization of the mines may be found in tho fact that the people of the country might be forced to pay the exorbitant and unjust demands of the miners for political reasons, whereas, under private ownership, the mines would be closed down. Another recommendation recom-mendation made by Mr. Hayes is to the. effect that the miners have the right to organize and to bargain collectively collec-tively with the government in case of nationalization of the mines. Being interpreted, in-terpreted, this means that the miners would present ultimatums to the government gov-ernment at regular intervals, and that strikes would result in the1 coal'fields unless these demands were promptly met. There would be absolutely no protection against the demands of tho organization, for if the government refused re-fused to submit to them, the people of the country would suffer on account of lack of fuel. If the railroads should remain under government control there would be an additional cause for worry, for tho trainmen on the coal roads would doubtless back up the miners and put in demands for themselves. Mr. Hayes appears to be a Socialist of the most radical type. |
