THORNTON GILMER IS WINNER OF THE 1918 STATE GOLF TOURNEY THORNTON GILMER received vers little competition in his match yesterday yes-terday with Mark Murphy of Ogden for the state golf title, defeating him by a score of seven up and six t: piay. The match, which was scheduled sched-uled for thirty-six holes, terminated on the thirtieth green, when both golfers tied the hole with fours. Gilmer started out with a rush in the morning round, winning the first two hole? in par, losing the third, and capturing captur-ing the fourth and fifth, which put him in the lead by three holes. This total was boosted to five by the time the first nine holes had been played. Gilmer tying the seventh with a six, ana winning the eighth and ninth holes by playing par golf. Gilmer's card for the first nine showed a 38, as compared with Murphy's 46. Murphy started out by capturing the first hole on the second half of the round with a five, but a poor seven on the second sec-ond hole lost him the chance of being but three down, as he succeeded in winning win-ning the third hole. The fourth hole was halved; Gilmer took the fifth, halved the sixth, and then boosted his total to six up by winning the seventh hole with a ragged seven. The eighth hole was halved, but Murpny had little trouble in winning the ninth with a par four. Gilmer practlcallv clinched the match In the first nine holes of the afternoon round. Murphy succeeded in winning but one hole in the round, the fifth, which he made in par four. The first hole of the round was tied: Gilmer won the second and third, tied the fourth, and dropped the fifth to Mur-phv. Mur-phv. Gilmer then took the two succeeding succeed-ing holes, and tied the eighth and ninth. Murphy took the first hole of the second sec-ond round with a five, but was unable to do better than halve the second and third holes, ending the match.
