Mines used hi laying the submarine mine barrage across the North sea were of a new type produced pro-duced by the mining section of the navy department's ordnance bureau, Secretary Daniels disclosed today, in a statement telling a part the American navy played in putting down the barrage In co-operation with the British navy. The problem first to be solved, Mr. Daniels said, was the development of a new type of mine, none of tho old ones being suited for use against submarines. The mining section of the ordnance bureau, bu-reau, under the direction of Commander S. P. Fullingwider, succeeded in developing devel-oping a type wnich has surpassed all expectations, ex-pectations, the secretary said. A new Turing mechanism was necessary, neces-sary, and for this purpose naval ordnance ord-nance officers made use of an electrical anti-submarine device whl'-h was invented invent-ed and submitted to the navy department bv ltalph Browne, an Amerlran. In May, 1917. The first adaptation of this invention inven-tion was tested in July, 311 7. The first mine parts were shipped last February, and from that time there has been a constant flow of mines to supply the several hundred mine planters under the American and British navies laying the barrage that Is now a menace to every German submarine venturing Into the Atlantic ocean. |
