Show BUILD ROADS WITH ALIEN ENEMY LABOR Public Approval of Suggestion That War Prisoners Be Employed on Highways Is General The suggestion first made that alien enemy labor be utilized in forwarding tho construction of the country's much-needed highways, particularly the Lincoln Highway, High-way, has met with general public approbation. ap-probation. Road building is of the most significant importance at this lime, particularly par-ticularly the construction of those through connected routes of travel whinh can bo used to the best advantage in the movement move-ment of government supplies ana generally used freight and food commodities. Road work was deterred In 1917 and mav he held up to :i degree during the present year by the difficulty of securing sufficient labor. It is stated on good authority au-thority that in many states large sums of federal and state aid money are Idle because of this condition. The number of able-bodied alien enemies ene-mies interned Is constantly growing and their services have not as yet been put to any practical use. Let some of them be put to work upon the Lincoln lii-hway. There are numbers num-bers of them interned In camps within reasonable-distance of this great thoroughfare, thorough-fare, and their labor could be put to a use. which would be of national benefit. Tills is particularly true in the west in the state of Utah, where the Lincoln Highway association in exerting every endeavor to brinir about the Improvement of the des-ert section of the road, to the west of Salt Lake City, which is held to bo of the greatest importance In removing re-moving the most formidable barrier in the path of transcontinental travel over the Lincoln Highway. The money for this work- has been provided by the Lincoln Lin-coln Highway association. Sleps should be taken at once by the proper authorities authori-ties to permit the use of the labor of the alien enemies interned in Utah upon j this construction |
