For some time past the Canadians have been getting tV bulk of the coal shipped over the great lakes to the detriment of industries, large and small, in this conn-try conn-try and the situation became so serious seri-ous that Dr. Garfield was compelled to take hasty action. Tlie United States government, while willing and anxious to help its allies to the full extent of j its ability, must provide for the needs j of its own industries and people first, , for every plant must be kept running on full time and the householders must have fuel for use in the ceming winter. win-ter. It is the same with all other commodities. The United States must come first. The people are willing to , conserve food and make any and all! kinds of sacrifices, but there is a point beyond which they cannot go in the matter of conservation. Tt is the duty of the authorities at Washington, now that we have food and fuel control, to see to it that there be little or no suffering suf-fering among the people from cold or hunger during the coming winter.
