Show I. W. W. IN THE ARMY, For some tirno mpnibfra of the I. W. W. have boon submitting to the draft without claiming exemption. This has been more or lens of a surprise to tho government, as it lias seemed to iudi-onte iudi-onte an entire change of heart. Recent treasonable activities of tho I. W. W. were directed against the draft and in Oklahoma a revolution was fomented to offer armed resistance. Naturally, the federal officials were puzzled when they heard that I. W. W. members were not claiming exemption and that some of them ha.d even come forward as vol-1 vol-1 unteers. Now the secret 'has been unraveled. Searching for I. Y. V. leaders indicted in-dicted becauso they had conspired against the draft, the government officials of-ficials found some of them in the ranks of the National army. They had permitted per-mitted themselves to bo drafted without with-out voicing the slightest protest and before they had been indicted. Manifestly, Mani-festly, they were not inspired by patri-! patri-! otism. Their motivo was to work as agents provocateurs among the troops, stirring up dissatisfaction, dissension and, wherever possible, disloyalty. In proof of the malign purpose of these sham soldiers the government quotos certain passagos taken from I. W. W. literature in which the leaders proclaim the revolutionary character of the organization and express a determination determi-nation to wage war against conscription and against the government generally. One of the Seattle leaders writes that Germans of his community are with the I. W. W. and are assisting them in their seditious practices. There are some Germans among -the I. W. Y. undoubtedly. Before there was any war in Europo there were many German radicals in the I. V. W. ranks. And after the United States cn-tored cn-tored the war Germans who had not been radicals entered the organization or assisted it. But we are confident that the mass of the German people in the United States have no sympathy with the objects of tho I." W. W. traitors. The most salient characteristic of an I. "W. AV., next to ignorance, is his proclivity for boasting, and it was no doubt in a spirit of exaggeration that tho Seattle leader bragged about having the sympathy and support of tho Germans of the big Washington city. Another piece of I. W. W. literature, mado pifblic by the government, reveals this tendency to boast. It represents the I. W. W. as fully able to wage a successful rebellion against the government govern-ment and pictures the governmental powers as afraid to challenge the Organization Or-ganization to combat. , Only by the most secret methods do the seditious chiefs of the organization dare to antagonize the government. And now that I. AY. secrets have been laid bare and unity of action destroyed the organization has beeomo practically harmless as a revolutionary society. It can strike only vicious littje blows here and there. In the army, however, the I. AY. W. will not be altogether without power to do evil. We have the example of Ger-1 Ger-1 man agents and Kussian I. V. AY. 's. working together to destroy the morale I of the Muscovite army and we have seen them able so to relax discipline that the soldiers who stood and fought unflinchingly under the czar ran away like rabbits when they had become soldiers sol-diers of freedom. But that was due to the besotted ignorance of the Kussian people. In our army tho agitators will ' be dealing with men far better educated edu-cated and more enlightened than themselves, them-selves, men who are inspired by a spirit of patriotism the downtrodden hordes of Russia have not learned to feel. Our soldiers should keep an eye out for the "copperheads'' in the army and scotch them as soon as they show their poisonous fangs. An anonymous letter signed "Soldier" has reached Tho Tribune, indicating that the writer, who indulges in I. AV. AA". sentiments, is a member of one of the military organizations or-ganizations in Salt Lake. That may be simply a blind, but it is not unlikely that mcmbors of the I. AY. Y. have joined some of onr western military. or-ganizations or-ganizations in tho hopo of being able 1 to foster sedition. If they attempt any thing of the kind they should be arrested ar-rested and tried as traitors. The death penalty can be inflicted and should be inflicted where the guilf is clear. z |
