Show Swiff i WORK IN MlliES Millions More Engaged in Industries Dependent Upon Metal Production. The magnitude of the mining industry may be grasped when one realizes that more than 6,000,000 men are engaged In the mines of the world. Of this number 3.SOO.00O are employed in the coal mines and .2.200,000 in tho metal mines. In addition, ad-dition, millions more are engaged in allied industries dependent directly upon the mines for coal and metal, according to the Engineering and Mining Journal. Mining is one of the hazardous industries indus-tries employing over 1.000,000 men in the United States, in which three out of every 1000 men employed are killed every year by reason of some accident. While complete data relating to non -fatal injuries in-juries are not available, reports to the United States bureau of mines for all metal mines in the United States show that about 200 men per thousand per year are injured sufficiently to cause a loss of time. A reduction of 50 per cent in the number of mine accidents viould mean a saving of 1500 lives in the United States every year, in addition to reducing reduc-ing the loss ol" time and suffering resulting re-sulting from more than 200,000 non-fatal injuries. |
