Show Willi TO BE i SUBJECTOF TALKS Sons of American Revolu-! tion Request Patriotic Sermons Ser-mons Be Preached. An appeal to all the churches in the state to dedicate a sermon to patriotism and love of country on the Sunday preceding pre-ceding Washington's birthday is being made by the Utah Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. It was decided at the last meeting of the board of managers of the society to make this request of all the religious denominations, de-nominations, and President A. R. Barnes, George Albert Smith and Gordon Hutehhis were named a subcommittee to take the matter up. The subcommittee yesterday issued the following: Washington's birthday comes on the 22nd of February. At this time nothing eoulrt he more appropriate for the clergy and other religious speakers of this state and the entire country than to make at least one sermon, delivered on the Sunday preceding, the 20th of February, of a commemorative, historical and patriotic nature. George Washington, to whom the United States owes its present existence ex-istence more than to almost any other man, could be properly dwelt upon at this time. The stories and anecdotes covering his life are so abundant, and offer such ample opportunity op-portunity for use in sermons and talks, that many excellent lessons are possible from them. The well-known saying about Washington, "first in war. first in peace, first In the hearts of his countrymen." tells the complete com-plete story of his life. This country Is passing through a critical period and every effort should be made to arouse a legitimate patriotism patri-otism among its citizens. Will you not join with the other clergy and religious speakers of this state in delivering at loat one ser-I ser-I mon on the 20th of February of a commemorative and patriotic nature, I featuring Goorse Washington, the I "father of his country," who believed ! in peace first, with the means to j maintain it. The purposes of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution are primarily to foster American patriotism, patri-otism, create an interest in the early history of the country, develop loyalty loy-alty and to make of the entire country coun-try a compart body, all working toward to-ward a common cause of "but one country" and that, "our country j first." And to this end. as a factor , in the community in which you re- I side, we earnestly urge your courte- ous co-operation and support, which j can at this time be most effectively , given in the manner herein suggested. |
