Show PRIZE WON BY BOYS IN WHITTIER SCHOOL Cleon and Ellis Sanders and Frank Smith Awarded $25 for Raising Variety of Vegetables. The policy of preparedness, following a summer of industry, adopted by three bovs of Whittier school, won them the $2.5 cash prize in the state-wide competition com-petition in club gardening. Announcement was made yesterday by Superintendent Ernest A. Smith that the prize had been won by Cleon and Ellis Sanders and Frank Smith, with a production of thirty-six varieties of vegetables and flowers from seed furnished fur-nished by the Porter-Walton Seed company, com-pany, which company also gave the prize. The three boys took ttirns for the past three weeks sleeping in their garden gar-den in a small shelter tent, with a faithful faith-ful watchdog as sentinel, to prevent marauders from destroying their chances to win in the contest. The two Sanders boys have applied their share of the prize money on a lease of one acre of ground, upon which they propose to do practical truck gardening gar-dening next season. The prize collection collec-tion of garden products will probably be included in the exhibit from the city schools in the state fair. |
