Show STATE CHEMIST TO TEST CITY'S WATER Treatment by Chlorine Gas Bring-s Matter Before Expert Ex-pert Authority. Whether or not there is tastable quantity of chlorine in the water from Big Cottonwood as a result of its treatment treat-ment with chlorine gas for purification is to be determined by State Chemist Herman Harms. Samples of the water during the time that tho gas was turned into it have been collected from various parts of the city served from the Big Cottonwood Cotton-wood system. These samples, taken under un-der instructions from Dr. R. W. Ashley, city health commissioner, will be submitted sub-mitted to the state chemist for chemical chemi-cal test for any ttace of chlorine. Bacteriological tests have established estab-lished the fact tthat the gas kills all bacteria in the water. Reports of citizens citi-zens that they could taste the gas in the water have not been dependable, some reporting affirmatively when their service is from the City creek pipe lines into which no gas has been injected at any time. If the tests to be made by Chemist Harms should show no trace of chlorine, free or in combination, then the reports that it can be tasted will be ascribed to imagination. Already reports of its being tasted have been made when the as had been shut off to see if the difference dif-ference could be noted. The purpose of the tests is to determine whether or not the quantity of gas being used to insure purity oJ the water is such as to have any effect upon those drinking the water. |
