Show MAY GET RELIEF. The Turkish government litis assented to the request of the United states that relief supplies for the suffering Syrians be allowed to reach their destination without hindrance upon the part of the followers of the prophet, ttfo far the appeal made in behaUu of the Armenians Arme-nians has not been productive of the desired result, but it is supposed the consent of the Turkish government will ultimately be obtained. Syrians and Armenians in the United States have collected supplies for their brethren in Asia Minor, and President Wilson has named October 21 and 22 as days upon which collections will be taken up in this country to still further relieve the distress of these afflicted subjects of the sultan. Unfortunately, tho assent of the Turkish government is not all that is required before supplies can be rushed to Beirut for the use of the starving Syrians. Turkey is at present blockaded block-aded by the entente allies, and it is necessary to obtain tho consent of the latter in order that the supplies reach their destination in safety. As the French government has expressed sympathy sym-pathy for tho distressed Syrians, and may itself contribute to their relief, it is thought favorable action may be taken by the entente allies in the near future. We hope, however, that these poor people are not actually in a starving starv-ing condition and in danger of death unless relief speedily reaches them, for negotiations in such matters are notoriously notori-ously slow and it may be weeks before the various entente belligerent governments govern-ments get around to the subject, in which ease relief supplies would not arrive ar-rive in time to do any good. The Polish relief societies and many charitably disposed persons in the United States have been trying to send food and clothing into Poland for many weary months, and the United States government has made appeal after appeal to both Great Britain and Germany, but the negotiations' promise to last as long as the war, and there is seemingly no hope for the Poles unless un-less they can continue to exist without help from the outside. We hope the Turkish government will be merciful to the Armenians as well as the Syrians, and that the entente allies will not find any obstacles in the way when they consider the matter of raising the blockade block-ade to the extent of allowing food supplies sup-plies to reach the sufferers in Asiatic Turkey. |
