CONTROVERSY OVER CHILD IS CONTINUED Kansas Woman Claims She Is Mother of Little Girl Who Is Subject of Suit in Third District Court. Mrs. .lames Manning of Leavenworth. Kan., tes tilled yesterday in the habeas corpus proceedings before Judge O. G. A rmstrong, for possession of f-'hvtlis Mabel Greenland, that she is the mother of the child claimed by Francis Greenland Green-land as his and denied to him by Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Burkhart. Her story corroborated cor-roborated that of the Burkbarts. grandparents grand-parents of Phyllis Mabel, going to show that the child living with the Burkbarts is not the Greenland child, but one adopted by the couple from the orphans' home and day nursery at Leavenworth. Greenland contends that the Burk-harts, Burk-harts, grandparents of his daughter, kept his child and turned over to him a child from the orphans' home with the intention inten-tion of deceiving him and thereby keeping keep-ing possession of their granddaughter, Mrs. Manning, however, positively identified iden-tified the child adopted by the Burkbarts as hers. She explained that she had placed her daughter in the orphans' home that she might be free to work and. earn her own living. The court will resume hearing in the case today in an effort to determine which of the two children is Phyllis Ma-be Ma-be Greenland, daughter of Francis Greenland and granddaughter of the Burkbarts. As the case stands now, all concerned are claiming the child under the guardianship of the Burkbarts. while no one appears to want tiie othr little, girl, who, the Burkbarts say. Is the real Phyllis Mabel, but who the father denounces de-nounces as being foisted upon him.
