MERELY DELAYED Woman suffrage may be delayed by the action of congress but it will come before the present generation passes away The process of winning the states one by one will be slow work but when a few more ot them are secured the constitutional amendment will be submitted and finally become part of the organic law of the land The suffragists w 11 not give up the fight in Washington even though compelled to renew the r battle in the states and it may be that the cutt ng down of the Democratic ma jor ty in the house to a mere handful of votes will make it possible to put a resolut on through some time next win tex on the eve of the pres dential cam paign The accession of Republican leader Maun to the ranks of the suffragists is h ghly important in th s connect on for up to the tune he proposed a suffrage amendment to the Philippines bill Mr Mann had been counted w th the oppo s t on It is poss ble under the c r cumstances that suffrage may become a national ssue in 1916 with the Hepub licans advocat ng the amendment Then all that would be necessary for the suf f agists would be to turn the Demo crats out m order to gam their point The weak point in th s line of argu ment lies in the fact that a majority of the voters in most of the eastern states are opposed to enfranch sing the women and might carry their resent ment to the polls if a suffrage plank were put in the nat onal platform by the men of liberal ideas from the west Perhaps it is idle to speculate upon th s j phase of the suffrage quest on The fact remains however that the fight for equal r ghts will go on unt 1 victory is won and it does not matter much what path is followed so long as the goal is atta ned
