Show DEMANDS ' IDE DM AUSTRIA BYU- S. , Government of Franz Josef Must Disavow the Act of Sinking the i Ancona, Pay Damages! and Give Assurances I Outrages Will Not Be! Repeated. GUILTY OFFICER TO BE PUNISHED Washington Authorities Irritated by Delay at Vienna and the State Department Shows No Disposition to Temporize Tempo-rize in Matter. Ty IrtemaricnaJ News Servic. WASHINGTON, Dec. S. A vigorous protest against ihe sinking of the i steamship Ancona bv an Austrian sjb- marine has been sent to Austria bv Secretary of State Lansing. It was learned today that the note was sent following Tuesday's cabinet meeting. Demands made on Austria are: That the government disavow the act. That reparation and indemnities be given Americans concerned. That assurances be given that there will be no repetition of such warfare. That the submarine commander guilty guil-ty of the outrage be punished by the government. Austria 'b unsatisfactory explanation, which conflicted with the official reports re-ports of the United States consuls at Algiers, Naples and Marseilles and the report of Embassador Page at Rome, prompted the protest. The Italian statement and the stories of the survivors sur-vivors were also widely at variance with Austria's version of the facts. Attacked Without Warning. The United States takes the unqualified unqual-ified position that it has jbeen established estab-lished that the Ancona was attacked without warning. It is also held as an established fact that the ship was fired upon while lifeboats were being filled with passengers. These conclusions are reached hy this government despite the sweeping denial in Austria's first statement of the allegations allega-tions of the American survivors and the Italian government, which were denounced de-nounced as "mendacious inventions." A second dispatch from Austria was to the effect that a report oould not be made until the statement of the submarine Commander was obtafned. One of the latest communications to the Fiate department was from Consul I.)-an Mason at Algiers, who stated unqualifiedly unqualified-ly that paer, gers were still aboard the Anrona when it sank. , Irritated by Delay. Thus far this government has not been apprised of the report made by the submarine sub-marine commander to his government. The dflay has irritated administration officials, particularly In view of the at tack upon the Standard Oil steamer Pe-trolite Pe-trolite by a submarine flying the Austrian flsg. The protest was eent to Embassador I'enfleld at Vienna, with instructions to deliver it at once to the Austian foreign office It is understood thin government doea not intend to temporize with Aus- I tria. It proposes to make that govern- ; ment subscribe without further delay to the principle that non-combatants on ves- j sels attarked by submarines must be given an opportunity to reaHi places of safety, providing the vessel attacked does not attempt to escape. |
