TURKS DEFEATED IN GREAT BATTLE Outflanking Movement in Northern East Prussia Prus-sia Gaining Momentum; Momen-tum; Another Army Is Advancing Toward the Thorn Fortress. LONDON, Jan. 80, 9:55 p. m. The end of the sixth month of Europe's great war finds the armies of the belligerent bel-ligerent nations completing preparations for & new series of operations or actually engaged in campaigns the extent of which hardly was anticipated when the declarations of hostilities were made. In Central Poland a deadlock still exists, ex-ists, but largely because of Bussia's tremendous tre-mendous resou:cc.s and the action of Tarkey the sphere of operations had been widely extended. -. Bnisia alone is engaged in fighting hostile armies from Tilsit, far in the north of East Prussia, to Tabriz, in Persia, Per-sia, a distance of over 1500 miles. Only that portion of her territory bordering on Rumania is free from menace, but according to her. reports, all is going well with her immense armies. The Russian outflanking movement in northern north-ern East Prussia is said to be gaining momentum. Cut German Railway. The armies on each side of Tilsit have cut the German railway between that city and Memel on the Baltic. On the southern front in East Prussia Prus-sia another army is advancing toward the German fortress of Thorn, while till another is holding a line of in-trenehments in-trenehments which protect Warsaw and which General von Hindeburg has been trying to batter through for three months. Other armies are again preparing pre-paring to meet a big Austro-German force which is attempting to regain Ga-licia Ga-licia and Bukowina, thereby turning Grand Duke Nicholas's left wing. To the eastward the Muscovite troops ar battling against the Turks in the OancasuB and Persia. They apparently have inflicted another defeat on the Turkish forces, for the Eussian official report says their opponents are retreating retreat-ing to Tabriz, while unofficial dispatches it state that the Bussians have reoccupied that city. Carpathian Campaign. What is regarded as the most important impor-tant campaign, however, is that which is developing in tho Carpathians, brought about by the Austro-German offensive, designed to drive the Bussians Bus-sians from Galicia and Bukowina, thereby there-by removing the menace of an invasion oi Hungary. The Austro-German allies are said to have concentrated no less than twenty-eight armv corps for this venture. Bo far as can be gathered from contradictory reports, the Kussians have won preliminary skirmishes in the western west-ern passes from Dukla to Wysczkow, while to tho oast tboy have been forced to retire beforo superior forces. The battles which are Ibeing fought in the wow are iust commencing, however, and many days must pass before a definite defi-nite deojsion is reached.
