Show 0. W. OTT DELIVERS FIILDECLIII1 Informs Mayor Park That Private Business Prevents Accepting Inspectorship. Formal refusal to accept the appointment appoint-ment of chief smoko inspector was made by O. W. Ott, mechauical engineer, in a letter sent to Mayor Samuol C. Park yostorday. Mr. Ott writes that ho would be glad to" be of service to tho city in private capacity, but points out that if ho assumed as-sumed a public office his private practise prac-tise as a consulting engineer would be seriously hampered mid curtailed and that in trying to attend to both duties he would be subject to criticism. II was Mr. Ott who suggested the creation of a smoko bureau and t aided in tho preparation of tho ordinance which passed sevoral days ago. Ho was the choico of tho commission for the position po-sition of chief Inspector at a salary of $1800 a year. T.n conference with the mayor Friday afternoon Mr. Ott said ho could not at-ford at-ford to devote all his time to tho work for $1800. It was suggested that perhaps per-haps the dopartmont could be so organized organ-ized that an assistant chid' could be engaged who would relievo Mr. Ott from actual inspection duty. This would leavo him free to act in a consulting capacity and at the samo time continue his private practice. Mr. Oth promised to consider this proposal, but in tho loiter loi-ter to the maj'or yesterday he informs tho chief csecntivo that ho has definitely definite-ly decided not to accept the position. Mayor Park said yesterday that in view of Mr. Ott's refusal ho would cast-about cast-about for another man. Soveral applications appli-cations for the position aro now before the mayor, but he has made no decision as yol. |
