Notwithstanding the fact that within this period tho former technologic branch .of the survey has becomo an Indepondout organization, or-ganization, tho bureau of mines, tho older bureau is larger now than it was six years ago. In personnel tho net growth of thc survey slnco 1007 has been 37 per cent: in general correspondence thc increase has been in per cent; tho total distribution distribu-tion of reports and maps has Increased 23 per cent; the increase in maps sold. per cent, and tho total cash receipts from sales of publications aro larger by 60 per cent than In 1007. The activities imposed by congress upon up-on tho geological survey have been Increasing In-creasing faster than thc appropriatlona provided therefor, until now It is all too apparent that the organization is undermanned under-manned and under-equipped. Tho do-mnnd do-mnnd upon the survey for inoro work cannot can-not be checked, but the means to meot thc demand can be provided.
