Stewart. Milton Bennion, professor of philosophy philoso-phy and dean of the secondary training school of the University of Utah, was yesterday elected to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Prof. William M. Stewart, dean of the normal department depart-ment of the university. The choice was made yesterday forenoon at a special spe-cial meeting of the board of regents of the institution. Professor Bennion is a native of Tay-lorsville, Tay-lorsville, Utah, where he was bom in .1870. He received his. training in the grammar grades of the public schools of Salt Lake Oity and was graduated from the Dcseret university, nefore it became the University of Utah. He then took up college work in tho University Uni-versity of Utah, from which he was graduated in JS07. with tho decree oi' bachelor of science. He received a de-grceas de-grceas master of arts from Columbia university in 3901. Soon, after his graduation from the university here, Professor Bennion started in his educational work, his first position being principal of the branch normal school at Cedar City. He occupied occu-pied that position for three years. Also, during the summer of 1S9S, he studied at the University of Chicago. He was appointed a member of tho state board of education by Governor Hebcr M. Wells, and served in that capacity from 189S to 3900. In 1900 Professor Bennion Ben-nion was granted a year's leave of absence ab-sence and spent the time at Columbia university, where he receivod his master's mas-ter's degree tho following vear. After returning from Columbia Professor Pro-fessor Bennion was made assistant professor of pedagogy at the University Univer-sity of Utah. In 100-i he was made professor of philosophy, but continued his work in tho educational department. depart-ment. He was made principal of the secondary training school when it was established in 1910. During the last year Professor Bennion has been on leave of absence from his work here and has been taking graduate work in the University of Wisconsin. |
