Show ELECTRIFICATION FOR UTAH com WOIS Contract With Telluride Company Com-pany Contemplates Entire Change, in Operation. RAILROAD IS INCLUDED D. C. Jackling Describes in Detail Alterations Ultimately Ulti-mately to Be Made. Complete electrification of all power mechanisms operated at the Utah Cop-por Cop-por mine in Bingham, tho great smelter smel-ter at Garfield, the big mill at Magna, all tho pumping plants connected with these works, and the Bingham & Gar-fiold Gar-fiold railroad, is the object ultimately to bo achieved as a result of a contract con-tract which is now being entered into between the Utah Copper management and the Tollurido Power company. P. C. .Tackling last night confirmed a report to this effect, meantime going go-ing somewhat into detail in the matter mat-ter and incidentally expressing confidence confi-dence in tho plan of operation outered upon by the now management of the Telluride company. Negotiating Big Contra-ct, When interviewed at tho Hotel "Utah Air. Jackling said: "Tho Utah Copper company has beon using about 0000 horsepower of electrical elec-trical encrgj- supplied by the Telhxrido Power company, and tho biilance of the necessary power has been generated by the steam plant at Magna. Wo are now negotisiling with the new management manage-ment of tho Tollurido company a contract con-tract to supply the Utah Copper company com-pany with its entire necessary electrical elec-trical energy, at present amounting to about 1-1,000 horsepower. Negotiations to this end have proceeded so far along anil have l)con of such satisfactory character, that there is no question as to its final ratification. "The closing of this contract with tho Tollurido company will mean the discontinuation of operation of our steam pliint at jNlagna. However, the machinery at this plant will bo permitted per-mitted to stand for some timo to come sis a measure of safety in case of omor-geney. omor-geney. The new management of tho Telluride company is proceeding along suAiciontly broad lines to give ub as-sursiuee as-sursiuee nf permanence in tho Hupply of electrical energy and in the reliability relia-bility of tho service offered. Electrify Piunping Plants. "At present the pumping plant at Magna is operated about lialf with steam powor ;iud Tiult1 with electricity. As soou :is tho pending contract Bhall be perfected and operations begun under un-der it, this pumping xlant will go entirely en-tirely into the electrical fiold, as will all other installations of that character connected with, tho works ot! tho Utah Copper company, "Construction of Hie line of tho Bingham & Garlield railroad is such that conversion of the road to' oloctric operation may be readily h:id. Miml you, J am not attempting to set ovon (Continued on Page Three.; ELECTRIFICI1T1 FOR M COPPER IIS , (Continued from Pago One.) an approximate date for this change, in the railroad, hut that it will ultimately ulti-mately be done when our plans have beou hotter matured J can cve positive posi-tive ussurancc. To Have Electric Shovels. "Yes. there is in contomplalioii a proposal to operate our numerous steam shovels by electricity. That ia to say, Ave are not making any experiments experi-ments .along this lino ourselves, but the builders 01" steam shovels are exercising exer-cising their ingenuity in this enterprise. enter-prise. When t.hoy shall have produced pro-duced a machine that will meet our requirements, according to the judgment judg-ment of our engineers, it will he adopted and used by tho Utah Copper company. We are assured by shovel builders that they will soon be able to tiivo us physical demonstrations of the fact that they have solved the several sev-eral problems "associated with construction construc-tion of tho electrical machine. Working" Out Details. "With rofercucc to adoption of the electric shovel much depends upon attendant at-tendant physical conditions at the poiut where tho machine ia to he operated. Having in mind conditions as thoy now ovist at the Utah Copper Cop-per mino, it appears to our engineers that electrical shovels would bo most available- in taking out the ore, rather than in the work of removing tho overburden, or overlying waste. In the ore. the levola are more permnuenl and there is less changing and shifting than in tho preliminary work of faking down tho overburden. Tho matter of transmission of electric energy by power lines to tho shovels would present pre-sent fewer difficulties on tho more pcrmanont levels. "Ilowover. thai is a detail to bo worked out later, tho chief burdcu now resting with the shovel builders who are experimenting on productions of tho electrical machine. Tf a satisfactory satisfac-tory device is produced then is no doubt whatever that we shall m;iko use of it wherever possible. Electrification Period. "This is a. period of electrification. Jt is by no moans a fad, hut is .an economic measure in almost all activities activi-ties where power entors as a largo factor. fac-tor. The Tcllurido company, under its new management, is coming into the industrial activities of Utah, Colorado. Colo-rado. Idaho, Nevada and Wvoming on a broad basis, giving splendid opportunity oppor-tunity for adoption of tho modern form of power on a scale and at such rates as -will cause it to bo a might v and economical factor in the development of this region. Tho contract that is now boing perfected hetweeu the Utah f'opper company and tho Telluride Power company is in line -with the broad policy of the power company's now management, and is the forc-Titnner forc-Titnner of further and wider adoption of electrical energy in the manufacturing manufac-turing and other industries of Utah and surroundiujr states." |
