Another chapter in the sensational dlvorco proceedings brought by Squire Coop of the University Univer-sity of Utah a'galiiBt Carmen Coop, which nbruptly terminated In the district court at Ogden n. month ago, when tho dlvorco action was "withdrawn and Mrs. Coop was allowed scparato maintenance by the court with SI00 monthly alimony, is about to be written Into the record. The latest proceeding has to do with J1G00 now In possession of Ben C. Rich, deposited by Prof. Coop In New York City several months ago at tho time the scene between Mrs. Coop and Miss Janet Cooke took place at the New York wharf, resulting in Miss Cooke being temporarily detained by tho immigration authorities at ,EIia Islnnd until certain charges of Mrs. Coop wero Investigated. When Mrs. Coop objected to Miss Cooke being allowed to enter tho United States and meet Prof. Coop, who was In New York awaiting her arrival from Kuropc, the New York newspapers were fllleo wjth sensational stories of the breach which had developed bctweon the music professor and his wife. Prof. Coop telephoned to Ben C Rich, a Mormon Mor-mon church official stationed at Now York City, asking him to assist him. By an agreement $1500 was loft In the hands of Mr. Rich ponding tho disposition of the divorce proceedings to be started by Prof. Coop in Utah. Tt was stipulated that when tho divorce proceedings to be started In Utah had come to an end, Mr. Rich was to pay over lo Mrs, Coop $1000 of the money and the balance to be paid to the attorneys for Mrs. Coop. "Whpn the separate maintenance decree de-cree was entered by the court at Ogden. Squire Coop wired Mr. Rich to forward the $1500 to him. In tho meantime an action had been brought by Mrs. Coop's attorneys against Rich In New York for the payment of the SS00. Rich then forwarded for-warded a check for $1000 lo C. C. Richards Rich-ards at Ogden to he held for Mr. Coop. DlFPatlsflcd with this action, Mr. Coop directed his attorney. H. H. Henderson, to bring suit against Rich for tho ro-coverv ro-coverv of the SlfiOO, and a summons was served on Mr., Rich when ho reached Ogdon last night. Discussing the matter while In Ogden todav. Mr. Rich said that ho was anxious to get rid of the $1C00. but ns there are now two suUs pending against him ono in New York and the other at Ogden, there Ih no reason why ho should have to pav attorney's fees In uninvited actions ac-tions brought against him In proceedings proceed-ings where he has no personal interest. Coop Is now on his way to Europe. Mrs. Coop is spending the summer at the Hermitage in Ogden canyon. |
