Show NEW SENATOR Henry L. Meyers of Montana Against Revision of Wool Schedule at Present. Would await report of the tariff board Seeks Information Before Applying Ap-plying the Pruning Knife to a Great Industry. 13UTTE. Mont.. April 23. United States Senator Henry L. Meyers. In a statement to the press tonight, forcefully force-fully outlines his attitude in connection with tho wool tariff. He says: "There seems to bo some misapprehension misapprehen-sion by some of the papers of Montana, and a misunderstanding by somo of the people, about my position In regard to the tariff on wool. Some of the pGople seem to understand that I am In favor of maintaining the present duty on wool and am unaltorably opposed lo any change therein. That Is a mistake. "Before leaving Montana for Washington, Wash-ington, a commllluu representing tho woolgrowers of Montana met me and simply asked that, in viow of the preparations prep-arations for further enlightenment on the wool business and the near approach of the regular" session of congress in December De-cember next. I opposo any legislation upon tho wool tariff until the meeting of congress next December, by which time such roport ought to be. and It Is presumed pre-sumed will be before congress. "Assertions that I am pandering to tho plaudits of a few sheepmen aro made by peoplo who either do not know mo or do not want others to know me. It may bo that my experience on the bench hns made mo adverse to precipitate action. I am asked to Jump blindfolded and with a meat ax Into Ihe mazes of a proposition proposi-tion that old heads last session took months to consider. I have allied myself my-self with the. progressive Democrats of tho senate and purpose staying with them. In this particular instance, how ever, it seems to me mat a request to wait a few months for further information informa-tion bofore applying tho pruning knife deep into an Important Industry Is not unreasonable. Those who attribute to me base and unworthy motives for not flying to their views, when by waiting n. bit I can get information, are welcome lo begin right now to cast around for a different man for my successor I will not he terrorized. "I think It would be reasonable and Just to wait until December for the report re-port of the tariff board and no longer, and then go to work on tho wool schedule: sched-ule: if the report should not be In by December, De-cember, go to work without it. T am further Inclined to lake this course by my own lack of enlightenment. J want to know what I am doing. Then, when tho time comes. I may urge the removal re-moval of all duty from wool." |
