Show m II SHERIFF Some Real Light, Is Thrown on the So-Called Stockade Question. FEDERAL BUNCH GliTTIXti EVEN WITH RECALCITRANTS Little History, Not Heretofore Imparled to General Public, Pub-lic, Is Given. ' The Dcserct News is often ncar-atnus-Ing. when It Isn't Idiotic, aud It Is frequently fre-quently both. Again. It Is just simply foolish. The latest foollah antic of the sheet occurred Tuesday, when It attempted at-tempted to throw some light upon the Ku-callcd stockade. The general iilnt attempted at-tempted to be made In the story Is to the effect that the police of tho clly alone have tho authority to close the stockade., and that Sheriff Joseph C. Sharp, who was so exceedingly busy with the stockade stock-ade problem last fall, when ho and the federal bunch labored under tho mistaken Idea that they were making voles, has expressed himself to tho following effect: "I understand that tho place is running again. If anybody will collect the necessary neces-sary evidence and file tho complaints.. I will do till hi my power io serve tho panel's pa-nel's and otherwise assist in the conviction convic-tion of those responsible for the conditions condi-tions " Now, isn't that real amusing? Hasn't Shcrllf Sharp Ihc same authority today that he had last fall when he closed the stockade aud declared time and time oca In that he would never allow it to reopen? Of course lie has, and he will not undertake to deny it. But. what's the use'' The News probably prob-ably Is aware of the reason that Sheriff Sharp is not working overtime these days and nights lu an effort to close tho stockade, stock-ade, hut it is loo dishonest to. say so. preferring to cast Insinuations against tho police department. Just a Little History. ' Here is why Sheriff Sharp Is not wrecking wreck-ing any suspenders In the effort to stamp out tho social evil, which lho News says exists in the stockade: There, is a mnlo-dorous mnlo-dorous colerio In Sail Lake, called the federal bunch. Last fall, this bunch got together and framed.up a uckot. Curtain other people framed up another ticket. Both tickets wen? .Mormon to a large extent, ex-tent, but one was called Republican, while tho other was dubbed CitlKens-.Denio-orntie. The federal bunch was the backer back-er of tho so-called Republican ticket, and in order lo convince the people that it was tho real goods on the purity proposition propo-sition It had nrdored Sheriff Sharp to close .the stockade. The principal opponents oppo-nents of tho stockade, however at least those who made the most noise pulled away from the ticket, put up by the federal bunch and voted the Citizens-Deniorraiio Citizens-Deniorraiio licket. headed by W. R. Wallace, Wal-lace, a Democrat. Finally the election was held and. as Is well remembered, the Americans 3 wept the city. A little later, when conditions had again became normal., a committee from the Republican crowd that had fought, the federal hunch wailed on the chief mogul of the bunch and asked him If It was his intention to allow the stockade stock-ade to reopen. When the committee had concluded its little say. the clih-r mogul cast, upon tho members a look of extreme disgust and said In substance: "Work is Reviewed. "We had Sharp close the stockade and wo had our organ (the 1 lemorrhil.ge) mnko the dirtiest light possible on Mayor Bransford and the American administration. administra-tion. Vn'o closed the stockade to make votes for our ticket and we vilified Mayor Bransford for tho same reason. Of course, we never expected to elect Murdoch but we did have hopes for a. time that we might possibly elect, a majority of tho council. Well, you fellows finally butted in and you know what, you did. You tore our ticket all to pieces and caused all kinds of confusion and bitterness. "But, that is not all. Down in the districts, where you yelled the loudest against the stockade. Mayor Bransford was given a larger vole than he secured two years before. It looks to me like you want Ihc stockade, and I want to tell you that you are going- io have it. At least, we arc notgoing lo interfere In the matter. Now get. to h I out of here." . And the committee got. This Is why Sharp "has no authority,," |
