Show f f Sports Here and There By AI Ablett Happy New Year! 1940 has passed into history, and what a year it wasl It found the sports world breaking break-ing all records, both in the number of people participating participat-ing and the number of spectators. spec-tators. Baseball, football, basketball, bas-ketball, horse racing, golf, tennis, ten-nis, skiing and hockey, all enjoyed en-joyed their greatest year. 1941 should be even better and bigger. Boxing should make a comeback, with all of the young men in the army where boxing is the main form of recreation and with a competent instructor in every camp. Baseball should have a good year for the same reason. So here's to 1941 j may it be the greatest sport year we have ever had. New Year's day found every bowl game sold out, and the fans who were fortunate enough to get tickets saw a thrilling game, regardless of which bowl they were in. Stanford, the favorite, came through in the Rose bowl, beating Nebraska 21 to 13, after a hard-fought game. The Cornhuskers took the load by driving 75 yards to a touchdown touch-down after the opening kick-off. Right there Stanford knew they were in for a football game. Like true champs, they came roaring back, and with all-American Frankie Albert directing the attack, at-tack, they took charge. Aside from one brief period when Nebraska Ne-braska scored their second touchdown touch-down on a long pass, Stanford was the master. The highlight of the game was when, after holding Stanford Stan-ford for four down on the one-yard one-yard line, Rohrig of Nebraska kicked out to the forty and Pete Kmelovic ran it back for a touchdown. Biff Jones, the Husker's coach, said he didn't . see a Nebraska man on his feet on this play. Just gives you some idea of the perfection of the play of Clark Shaunnessy's team. Standlee may have been the - standout during the season sea-son for Stanford, but New Year's day there were three men in that backfield that were as good as Standlee or anybody else. Albert, Kmeto-vie Kmeto-vie and Gallarneau For Nebraska, Alfson in the line, Rohrig and Francis in the backfield played bang-up ball. In the Sugar bowl game, Boston Bos-ton college carried too much power for Tennessee- O'Rourke passed and ran Tennessee right off the field in the last quarter to score the winning touchdown. The score was 19 to 13. In the Orange bowl Mississippi state showed the power that made -them the stand-out team in the deep south. They handed Georgetown their second defeat in four years. They had to stand off a last-half rally that had produced pro-duced one touchdown and was threatening on several other occasions. oc-casions. Georgetown had one tough break when they had a play called back that had placed the ball on Mississippi's three yard line. But it looked like the best team won. The J-Boys in the state's backfield, Jefferson and Johnson, played aJl-American ball. Lio, Georgetown "guard, was in on most every play. In the Cotton bowl Texas Aggies Ag-gies outlicked Fordham, 13-12, that saw their second and tying touchdown a gift. After Fordham had kicked 58 yards, the ball was called back and put on the Rams one-yard line and given to Texas A. & M. Kimbrough went over on the next play. One of those things. But Sleepy Jim Crowley shewed the southwest a back-field back-field second to none in the country. coun-try. Eshmont, Noble, Felipowiez and Blumenstock played better ball than the famed Aggie back-field back-field of Pugh, Thompson, Kimbrough Kim-brough and Conatser. Smith played for Conatser. Basketball will go into full swing this week-end- Gemmell has a game tonight with the Og-den Og-den Pioneers, an all-star team from the north, loaded with stars and led by the Morris brothers of Utah Aggie fame- On Saturday Satur-day the club team tangles with the Utah county all stars. These two games should be as good as the fans will see all year. Coach A. J. Boberg of the club team had his men out on New Year's day, too, that he might have them ready. There is a fine spirit on the club team and the boys are playing great ball- But they will have to be at their best over the week-end to cope , with the teams from Ogden and Provo. See you at the game tonight-AL. |
