| Show VS METHODISM communicated J the speakers of the lato conference of the methodists held in provo discoursed elaborately on the subject of mormonism the aey mr JEFFREYS taking as his subject the attitude of methodism towards mormonism in bis remarks ho said the attitude towards mormonism be as toward other sinners the gospel of christ is to bo preached as against th gospel of JOSEPH SMITH we have again been mistaken in oar opinion of the reverend pon aleman of the methodist persuasion who has resided for a season in provo it occurs to us that the rev mr JEFFREYS has blown a very weak trumpet and uttered a doleful sound in the usual line of misrepresentation which his predecessors have res us the expression towards other sinners was coming as it did from such a faultlessly fault essly pious reverend did hi wish his hearers to understand that the attitude towards mormonism should be exclusively mor louism or the cormons mormons Mor mons and when he irreverently referred to the gospel of JOSEPH SMITH as though tho cormons mormons had po gospel except of man did nho vee ot cloak the reflection which he cast upon methodism or to use his own phraseology the gospel of JOHN WESLEY the mor mons jo not have a gospel of JOSEPH SMITH be forever remembered but they of JESUS as revealed in its falness lo 10 the prophet JOSEPH SMITH if the gospel which the latter day saints have accepted originated with JOSEPH SMITH then it is entitled to the same authority as the methods ism and calvinism af WESLEY and other reformers take the history of methodist Metho diso from its inception in the person of JOHN WESLEY through all its ramifications and changes and note the perforated foundation it has had to build upon aa compared with that upon which the latter day saints me building their faith the latter day saints have no man made gospel no man made gods but a gospel divinely revealed from tho eternal father ane man made bcd or christian eod has no parts no passco is and therefore cannot hear see or speak there is a characteristic of the latter day saints in fact a principle divinely revealed that places them above being an enemy to governments or religious creeds their motto and principle is to move on and do what is right let the consequences follow in fact they follow this most christian admonition from their lord and if he thine enemy trespass against thee and repents not the first time nevertheless thou forgive him and if ho trespass against thee the second ime and repents not nevertheless thou forgive him and if he trespass against thee the third time and repent not thou forgive him GOD the father is not an enemy even to satan he is not an enemy to any created being in beav en on the earth or in hell but sa tan is an enemy to god and all who assume the attitude of an enemy to man or fellow religionists follow tho of their master the devil and cannot therefore be a disciple ofa the meek and lowly laboe forgiveness was given to lepni JOSEPH JACOB ISAAC and ABRAHAM abo history of the latter day saints is replete with incidents of persecution at the hands of methodists baptists presbyterians rians and other religious denominations but a few years ago almost every christian denomination in america banded together for the purpose of influencing the government in depriving the mormon people of the right to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness and they still persist in maintaining the attitude of an enemy toward the latter day saints and like the blind leading the blind must soon fall in the pit prepared by their master the archenemy arch enemy our next will appear under the heading origin of mormonism |
