Show LOST TIES H NOT fEUOCATED Mormons Come to Conclusion That They Are Not at the Xorth Pole. ELDER ROBERTS CHOSEN TO MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT Says Theory Is a Misapprehension Misapprehen-sion of the Great Things of God. Prominent leaders of the Mormon church have at last come to the conclusion con-clusion that the lost tribes of Israel are not at the north pole. Elder Brigham H. Roberts, a member of the first seven presldonta of tho seventies, was tho man chosen to make this known, which ho did In a lengthy address at tho tabcrnaclo Sunday afternoon. After- commenting briefly on the discovery of the north pole by Dr. Frederick A. Cook and Commander Robert E. Peary, Elder Roberts explained thnt the. Idea has been held by some that tho lost tribes of Israel were at the north pole, and that the Latter-day Saints ex- i pected that they would be found there. ! The fact having been proven beyond a doubt that no people reside at the top of the earth by tho two great American explorers. Elder Roberts evaded the theories the-ories concerning tho matter, which have been taught by the elders of the church In the past, nnd attempted to get around It by declaring that although some of the church literature might lead to the belief that the lost tribes were at the pole, there is "absolutely nothing In tho revelations of God which would lead to such a theory." Long Discredited. ' Elder Roberts stated that explorers have been sufficiently near the pole for a number num-ber of years past to prove that It was Impossible for a tribe of people to live in that country of Ice. At the beginning of his address. Elder Roberts snld that the subject of his talk could be expressed in the sentence. "No matter how great or comprehensive your conception of the things of God may be, tho things of God, bo assured, arc always much greater than your conception of them."' In line with this text. Elder Roberts asserted as-serted that tho notion on the part of certain people that the lost tribes would bo found at the north pole was merely a misconception of the great things of God. Elder Roberts declared that perhaps It was some such thought as the one ho expressed ex-pressed In Ids text that led "our great prophet" (alluding to Joseph Smith) to say that tho things of God arc of groat Import. "Associated with this principle," said Elder Roberts, "there is as a consequence con-sequence of man's failure to recognize tho greatness of the things of God. danger dan-ger of a misapprehension of them." Ho cited a number of Illustrations from scripture where misapprehension resulted from certain ones being unable to understand under-stand the greatness of the things of God. declaring that "we. too, fail to recognize that, great as our conception may be. yet those divine things are infinitely greater than our conception of them." |
