That the saloon had been bur-g bur-g hi ri Ked wj discovered by the proprietor, proprie-tor, .lohnTjchniierer, when he opened the saloon Friday morning and examined exam-ined the cash register. Ben foelson, night watchman, who looks after the property, called Schmie-rer's Schmie-rer's attention to the fact that the front door of the saloon was open at 1 :f!0 o'clock- Fridav morning. Schmicrer immediately im-mediately locked the door, with (he remark re-mark that he must, have forgotten lo lock it when closing up for the night. That the work was the work of very clever criminals is the opinion of the police, who point to the following facts to support their theory: Twelve pass kevs were found in front of the safe, nlT of the keys being of the s-ame pattern pat-tern but of "different sizes. How the burglars knew the pattern of the key which unlocks the safe, which is of the old-fashioned type, was a mystery until the police noticed a habit of John Schmicrer. When speaking to anyone Sclmiierci" has the habit, of holding his kevs in his hand and iuggling with them. It is supposed that the burglars walehed him go to the safe, and after noticing from a distance the general phape of the key he used, waited until they saw the keys in his hand to get t lie correct pattern. Twelve duplicate kevs were found in front of the safe, and I wo on lop of the ice box, where it is supposed that one burglar was hiding when the saloon was locked up for the night. All of the keys found in (he saloon were too large for tho safe. The police are working on a number num-ber of clues which were found in the. saloon, and which they believe will lead to the capture of the men who did the work. |
