Show INCOMPETENT WITNESS. Doctor James E. Ta Image, among other things undertaken by him during dur-ing the Smoot investigation at Washington, Wash-ington, gave the committee the benefit of his personal knowledge for the identification iden-tification of a certain paper presented by Colonel Worlhington, Iho special counsel for Smoot and the Mormon church. This paper purported to be "a list of all Iho officials of the church down to bishops, and their counselors and clerks." The object of this document docu-ment was to show the number of known polygamisls among these ofli-V-ials, fhcsi! being designated by asterisks preceding their names, for instance: in-stance: KANAB ST A KM 12dwln Woolley, president of the stake. Thomas Chamberlain, first counselor loel II. Johnson, second counselor. Howard Chamberlain, stake clerk. Doctor Ta Image was questioned as (0 his general knowledge concerning the accuracy of this paper, and as, to the general authorities he said, "I know each one of thorn personally." With reference to the stake authorities and the bishops and their clerks, his testimony testi-mony is fairly summed up in the following: fol-lowing: Mr. Worlhington Have you found the list correct when yon havo koiic over It? Mr. Talmage Wherever 1 (1ml the name of a man with whom I am acquainted. 1 find that the statement of his office Is correct. Mr. Worthlngton And also the Indication Indi-cation with reference to his status as to polygamy? Mr. Talmage And as lo Ills reputation, repu-tation, as far as I know; yes. sir.- See volume of Smoot proceedings, pages 100 and 101. This list, so Mr. Worthinglou informed in-formed the committee, was prepared under the direction of the lirst presidency presi-dency ar his request; and was there-, fore regarded as aulhorilativo in every particular; and in confirmation of this supposed accuracy Doctor Talmage testified, tes-tified, "I know of no man opposite whose name there is no asterisk on that list who is, by reptile." a polygamist. " The Tribune will say for ifsclf. and in agreement with the popular and just estimate, that in this matter Doctor Ta I nia go testified truthfully and honestly hon-estly before his fellowmen. and gave information and confirmation to (he very best of his knowledge. But we desire to show that tho doctor could not have been a competent witness here, if the measure of competency is to be taken from Iho extent of his knowledge, and to indicate wherein he and fho committee must have been deceived de-ceived by the first presidency of the Mormon church. For that purpose we will take tho names as fhey come in the list of officials at that time (Jann-ar-, 1005). and point out our corrections. correc-tions. We find no asterisk opposite fho unme of J. 11. Hart, fust counselor in the Bear Lake stake. If this is Iho same .James IT, Hart who served as a missionary mis-sionary in England upwards of thirty years ago, we are inclined to dispute the presentation that ho is a monogamist. mon-ogamist. As wo recall his situation for. some time after his return to Utah, thoro was a considerable talk, not only concerning his indiscriminate personal circulation among the sisters, but also with respect to his having succeeded in some way to the savings of some of theso ladies. If. however, this is not the same Hart, of course theso remarks will not apply in any sense. In view of the deep scercc-y generally main tamed in these caacs, wo have the right to mention this old repute, just as in other instances more repute is all there is available to be relied upon. Frank. V. Taylor, president of the Granite stake, is not designated as 'a polygamist; but we have no hesitation in saying that he i3 such, his offending being so generally -known hereabouts I hat it is unnecessary lo make further comment, except to say that if he was not a polygamist in .-Ipoii his crime .was committed at an exceedingly late date, and therefore the more to be oii'domncd. Nor is John M. Cannon, second coun-jiolor coun-jiolor to Frank V. Taylor, marked as a aolygamist, although frequent -accusation to thai, end has not brought forth the rcspiiu.se in protest flint would naturally be expected from an . iuno-eenl iuno-eenl man. Further comment in his ease may be iimited to that co.ucfuding the Taylor mention. In (he Salt" Lake slake we find that the name of Edward T. Ashtoir; second sec-ond counselor to President Ncphi L. Morris (whose brol hcr-in-law he' is), appears without an appended .asterisk. It. has always been the thought; of The Tribune that Mr. Ashton's stains was of such long standing and was so generally gen-erally known .and recognized that no mistake could possibly occur'hcrc. But by this we areMiot asserting that the plural marriage occurred1 before the issuance is-suance of the manifesjp. In the Summit stake we observe that no asterisk is j laced- opposite the name of Angus -1. Cannop. bishop of the Parley's Parle ward. Friends and acquaintances- Of Anna Bockbolt assert that this. young lady has become Bishop Cannon 's 'plural wife since lhc manifesto: mani-festo: and if since 1905, so much tho Worse. James Ij. - Wrathall, then bishop of Grantsvillo, Tooele stake, is not designated desig-nated as a polygamist: but it is common com-mon talk out that way that he has married Chariot to Wowberry in polygamy polyg-amy since tho manifesto. And this was generally known to bo true at the time th is list was introduced in the Smoot case. The lis! of Wasatch stake contains the name uf Joseph W. Mushct usfflipJ" clerk, and without asterisk. HiavfliLflVtA of the moPt recent cases-of XiWcfi0T criminality that has coine to puujntnt tontion. his offense having bconj$&J1 mitted undoubtedly since his from the Wnsatch stake into Sn!tjgif3 county. That being true, if mijfal$fi)ti1 assumed that the list watt not ini-j,, but fixing the law-breaking at ajijp-so ajijp-so recent as"to merely add to ilsb!j '' llagrancy. "So that the only fault wo caMf' sibly Hud. with Doctor Tahnago, IjfflM 's count of his attempting to ost1tEj5$ the accuracy of that list, is thai; fifsls?Ji f unwise in essaying the task, in viable: what ho must know to be the utt possibility for any one man -(cSg'L ( tho "only one matt on the carthjfj&-j( f time" holding the "keys of this jMfo th hood,'-' namely Joseph F.
