COGHLAN WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 A lacgo number of ponsion bills were passed by tho hoiiso "today and by tho decisivo voto of 42 to-103 tho house refused to incroaso tho pension of Julia B. Cogh-lan, Cogh-lan, widow of tho late Roar Admiral Coghlan, U.' S. N., from $50 a month, as recommended by tho committoo on pensions, to $100, as proposed in an amendment offered by Representative Olcott of New York. Consideration of a bill to prohibit tho importation of opium except for medicinal purposes was prevented by Mr. Pa3'no of New York on tho ground that such action would roduco tho national na-tional rovenue $1,000,000 a month and would not lessen tho uso of tho drug. At 2 o'clock tho house adjourned .until .un-til tomorrow, whon memorial services will bo hold for iho lato Representative Representa-tive Dunwell of New York. |
