Important ' reductions re-ductions from the now schedules of transcontinental freight rates, which went Into effect January 1 and which have aroused the active opposition of shippers from the Atlantic to the Pacific, Pa-cific, have beeu agreed upon by ihc railroads rail-roads and will be made effectivo as soon as the amended tariffs can oe filed with the interstate oommcrco commission. These concessions are, in most cases, a restoration of the old rates in effect be- i fore the first of the year, and amount I to from 3 to 25 per, cent on large numbers num-bers of the commolitics. The increases mado on Jannar' 1 aud the reductions announced affect both cast bound and west' bound rates. Shippers in California and on tho coast verc more affected than the eastern tor-ritor3. tor-ritor3. Some of the principal reductions reduc-tions are of especial interest to Chicago aud the central states. |
